A man and a woman by the crackling fire
Watch the wood burn without a word,
In the dry air, a torrent of blame grows higher,
A silent scaffold, unspoken and unheard,
The man lifts a brow at the stranger beside him,
Poised to unpack all that he's kept inside,
But at the last moment, his courage grows dim,
The well of his daring has long since run dry,
His thoughts drift back to love's first light,
When she danced in her dress of flowers,
Her velvet gaze turned to him, bright,
Awakening promises of splendid hours,
A superman then, a lover so bold,
For whom no challenge was too steep,
He could have stolen the Hesperides' gold,
Or roamed the world, a blue lotus to keep,
But ceaseless winds will erode even stone,
The proudest walls, left untended,
Like sublime tales, with no adventure of their own,
Crumbling beneath dull routine, unmended,
Now the flame that once lit up their lives,
Is nothing but ashes, leaving them apart,
Spectators of a lukewarm hearth that survives,
A sorry copy that warms the skin, not the heart.
